Dogs Have Several Different Types of Hair
The continuously growing coats of breeds such as Poodles, Yorkshire Terriers, Cockapoos, West Highlands and Shih Tzus need regular brushing at home to prevent tangles forming. Their coats then need trimming, ideally every 6-8 weeks so that the hair does not grow too long and become unmanageable.
If you are going to bath a long-haired dog, it is very important to brush the coat out thoroughly BEFORE wetting it and again whilst drying, to prevent mats and tangles forming. It is important to get them used to this at as young an age as possible.
Dogs with short but thick haired coats such as Labradors and German Shepherds need much less frequent bathing, but they do need regular brushing (particularly when moulting) to remove loose old hair – this is specially important for the very thick coats of dogs like the Chow. Regular brushing helps control some of the seemingly endless amount of hair that they can shed at home.
Bathing a reluctant large breed dog can be quite a challenge, and thoroughly drying the coat even more so.
The very short and fine-coated dogs such as French Bulldogs and smooth-coat Dachshunds need no trimming. For many of them, brushing is pleasurable rather than necessary, but is does help with skin health through it’s massaging effect. Bathing, conditioning and drying is altogether easier for these breeds.
If you prefer to groom your dog at home, we’d be happy to advise you on suitable equipment and coat care products for your dog’s health, breed and size.
