Osteopathy

Nadine at Work

Osteopathy is system of medicine that uses the manipulation and massage of the bones, joints, and muscles for the treatment of medical disorders. It emphasizes the interrelationship between structure and function of the body and recognizes the body's ability to heal itself; it is the role of the osteopathic practitioner to facilitate that process.

Cranio Sacral Osteopathy is a specific form of osteopathic work that interacts with the very subtle patterns of movement within the body to help ease imbalance and restrictions in the free movement of tissues. It is particularly suitable for the treatment of animals where large amplitude adjustments ('bone-crunching') is rarely possible or appropriate. It has been a key part of the treatment methods of the Hyde Park Veterinary Centre since it's inception in 1998.

Osteopathy offers unique benefits to our animal patients in that it can be used to improve and correct postural problems and to identify and influence points of imbalance in the physical structure of the body. In practical terms, gentle and sensitive manipulation is used to ease points or areas of pain or restriction in movement.

Developed originally in the late 19th century in America by Dr Andrew Still, Osteopathy is now recognised as part of the medical mainstream, to the point where osteopaths in the UK now have the same legal status as doctors and dentists. Both Nadine and Andrew are actively involved in the teaching and training of osteopaths working with animals, both at the European School of Osteopathy and at post graduate level at the British College of Osteopathic Medicine
