Boarding Kennels & Cattery

If you need to board your dog for anything from a couple of nights to a fortnight or more, we have some suggestions for you:

Small, well-behaved dogs can sometimes sleep over with Susannah, the dog nanny who runs the creche at the clinic. This is very dependant on her having space and your dog having the immaculate manners of a well brought-up city pooch, as this is a very personal and exclusive service. For larger dogs, or those who fancy a bit of rough and tumble with a whole gaggle of new friends in the fresh air of the beautiful Kent countryside, we suggest you give our friends at Haxted Kennels a ring 01732 863 166. They have spacious individual kennels that are heated in winter, and large open paddocks where the dogs can play together during the day.

We have been using Haxted for years and years, and are very happy with the way the dogs bound off to the bus for the trip there and bounce back into the clinic on their return. We reckon many of them have a better time on their holidays than their owners do on theirs! Check out Haxted Kennels.

Cats can often stay at the Little Orchard Cattery just up the lane from Haxted Kennels.

Pickup and delivery is free from the 61 Connaught Street on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings, with other days and times by special arrangement

Rugby & Management »Rugby and Management Our practice manager recently returned from a rugby tour in Cape Town, where she got to play against the South African as part of  the Nomads squad. We decided to ask her a few questions about her love of rugby and how it all started. Q. You've come a long way in a short time - how did you start playing rugby and who do you play for now? A. I've always had a passion for sport and before moving to the UK there was Aussie Rules. When I moved to London in 2002 I didn't think I would find a sport which could replace it, thankfully I was wrong. It was quite by accident that I started playing rugby union, but I haven't looked back. I joined London Welsh 7 years ago and made a move to Saracens 2 years ago. During the summer I play 7s for the Moody Cows.  
Hyde Park Dog Show 2012 »Connaught Village Festival; sun shines for Dog Show of the Year  For those of you who made it to the Connaught Village Festival this year, you will know doubt have come across, or taken part in, the Hyde Park Veterinary Centre Dog Show. If you couldn't attend on the day, and have wondered what you missed, we have a small video to highlight some of the day's entertainment. This year we raised over £700 for the charity, well up on last year's effort. A massive thank-you to all those who made the day possible and to those who donated time and money to the event. Exotic Pets at Hyde Park »Do you have any exotic pets at home? Birds? Snakes? Tortoises? Lizards? Rats, mice, hamsters, rabbits and gerbils? Do you keep fish? It's difficult to find a vet in central London who has real experience with treating these species, but your search is at an end! Tim Hopkins (index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=47:vets&catid=10:the-team&Itemid=37) is a vet with just that experience. He has a special interest in small, furry, feathered and scaly creatures and is now joining the team at the Hyde Park Veterinary Centre. The Complete Animal Unleashed »The Complete Animal has officially been unleashed The Complete Animal L-R: Jeanette, Lynne, Annie, Janine, Martina and Mel Sunday the 27th of May saw the Hyde Park Veterinary Centre begin their fundraising efforts for the year. The clinic has decided that all team events entered for this year will be under the name 'The Complete Animal'. An alter ego for the members of the Hyde Park gang, but once a dream of Andrew's which involved calling the clinic this. Perhaps we should be happy for it to represent the people within the walls of the clinic and not the clinic itself?! In an effort to increase cancer awareness and raise money for Cancer Research UK, the girls ran 5km in Hyde Park. With temperatures souring to 29 degrees on the day, the team managed to finish in good spirits - albeit a little red-faced. To date, the target we set to raise £150 for the cause has been smashed and the team total is currently £536.36 plus Gift Aid. We must send out a big THANK YOU to all who have sponsored us and a special thank you to Davies Veterinary Specialists (http://www.veterinaryspecialists.co.uk/) who donated £250. Hyde Park Vet's Dog Show »The Hyde Park Vet's Dog Show 2012 In conjunction with the Connaught Village Summer Festival, the Hyde Park Veterinary Centre Dog Show is back. On Wednesday the 20th June Connaught Village will play host to the annual Summer Festival, it will also see the return of the ever popular Hyde Park Vet Dog Show which began in 2011. There's a bigger arena, better sound, fantastic judges and great prizes, it promises to be bigger and better than ever, so come on down, join in the fun and help raise money for The Mayhew Animal Home. The CV Summer Festival does bring with it some logistical changes on the day. If you are planning on travelling into the village, Connaught Street.,Porchester Place and Kendal Streets will be closed from 11am, they will not re-open until 10pm. Please look for alternative routes and/or parking.
Vets welcome launch of Davies London »Vets welcome launch of Davies London Vets have welcomed the introduction of Davies London, the capital’s new private specialist veterinary practice based near Hyde Park. More than 60 attendees at the formal launch of the initiative last week showed enthusiasm for the increased choice and convenience that the new service provides. Davies London, a subsidiary of Davies Veterinary Specialists (DVS), Bedfordshire, is based at the premises of the centrally located Hyde Park Veterinary Centre on Connaught St W2. The new service conveniently allows clients to consult with a leading team of RCVS Recognised Specialists in the heart of London, thus avoiding the need to make the lengthy and sometimes stressful journey out to a distant referral centre.

The Sunday Times now has a pet section amongst it's Home pages, and our very own Andrew Prentis writes for the Vet's Corner. Some of the questions answered to date include; Q. I am the proud owner of an English setter called Harvey. He is beautiful, charming and affectionate, with a great sense of humour, but the breed is in danger of dying out. How can we stop this? Joy Considine, by email   A. What a good question! My great-grandfather was Tom Steadman, the celebrated breeder of the Mallwyd kennel of English setters around the turn of the 20th century. He had a multitude of show winners, including supreme champions at Crufts. One of the issues in the canine world now is that too few pedigree dogs are bred for their working abilities. The obsession with form over function has led to dozens of breeds and countless thousands of dogs being affected by inherited diseases. This animal-welfare issue has recently been highlighted by the BBC and is the subject of a dispute between the RSPCA and the Kennel Club. Rather than slavishly following fashion, where pets become accessories rather than necessities, let’s not forget some of the great old breeds. They were great for a reason.

Horseman's Sunday and World Horse Welfare »44th Annual Horseman's Sunday and World Horse Welfare Sunday the 18th of September saw Connaught Village will play host to Horseman's Sunday. The Hyde Park Veterinary Centre has been a keen supporter of Horseman's Sunday ever since Andrew Prentis first arrived in the Connaught village in 1998. This year the Hyde Park Veterinary Centre helped raise over £140 for World Horse Welfare, a fun day out for all involved and stay tuned for photos appearing in the gallery very soon.

At 63 Connaught Street you can find the usual suspects, with all the usual vet clinic shenanigans, only with a little more space than we used to have.
